DESCRIPTION: Length up to 4mm. A small Lauxaniid Fly that needs careful scrutiny to fully identify. The orange colouration and the 4 to 6 spots on the abdomen provide initial clues with closer examination showing all yellow antennae and palps, a shiny upper surface to the thorax and 2 stenopleural bristles. BEHAVIOUR: These are small flitting flies that like to flit around in the thick grasses and are only really seen when sweep-netting.DISTRIBUTION: A frequently encountered species in the southern half of the UK.HABITAT: A species that frequents grasslands. PERIOD: Adults seen through the summer months with peak counts in August.
